Benoni at a glance
Benoni is a sprawling city situated on the East Rand of Gauteng. This area forms part of the Greater Johannesburg region, and since 2000 has been part of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality. The City of Lakes as it is now known, was proclaimed a municipality in 1907, and achieved city status in October 1992. Whilst Benoni started as a “gold town” it has evolved over the years and is better known today for its importance to industry and as a service hub for the area. Benoni is situated on the East Rand in the South African province of Gauteng. Once a small mining town, Benoni was transformed in 1906 with landscaping and the introduction of various lakes and dams to channel mine water. Today these beautiful reservoirs remain and the area is dotted with many lakes where people fish, boat and relax.
